1 out of 5 stars Dangerously poor design, weights do not lock properly   September 1, 2010
Ernest Hemingway "M"
The worst thing about these weights as opposed to other locking weight blocks out there is that these seem to lock when they aren't really gripping the weights, because the locking mechanisms are made of plastic that gets cracked or worn and doesn't hold them securely. After reading reviews here and elsewhere and talking to friends and a sales guy at a place where they sell models from both manufacturers, it seems that these kinds came out after the other kind, and were more mass-produced and include a fancy turning wheel lock instead of a solid metal pin assembly which is simpler and less prone to complications. Like another reviewer said- great idea, failed design and implementation. I cannot believe that they are still selling these or that they haven't been sued for damages- I lost a plate that fell on the bridge of my foot, I can only imagine that it is a matter of time before there is a class action lawsuit or before someone gets their skull cracked while doing flys with these things. I sold mine at a garage sale just to get rid of them so I guess I'm as guilty as the company for selling junk, but my next investment in weights will be with the simpler block- style weights, their "Elite" version I think.

5 out of 5 stars Spend the money and get these, 100% worth it   August 23, 2010

I'm sure like so many of you, I'm doing P90X and I was torn between buying these are saving a significant amount of money and trying the Walmart 25 lb adjustable dumbbells for roughly 1/3 the cost. I went back and forth before finally biting the bullet and deciding to spend the money on these because you rarely regret buying what you really want as opposed to settling. Boy, was that the right choice.

These dumbbells are absolutely amazing. They are very tight during lifting so there's no clanking or weight shifts, the dials are very easy to adjust, they adjust quickly, and are easy to read. This is crucial for anyone doing P90X or any other video workout because they are generally fast paced. These dumbbells allow you to move seamlessly between exercises.

I decided not to spend the money on the stand and I do not regret that decision at all. $150 seems pretty steep when these dumbbells come with sturdy floor blocks to set the weights back in.

I went to Walmart to try the adjustable ones and they were very loose, they felt poorly made, and if you read the reviews there's apparently a lot of complaints about them falling off. I have no reservations what-so-ever about putting the Bowflex 552's directly over my dome.

The only thing that could present a problem for people with these is that they are indeed massive (check the dimensions). I have wide shoulders so it's not a big deal for me, but people on a smaller frame my have trouble with exercises that involve twisting and turning the weights during the lift. I don't have a problem with it personally, but I could see where it would be an issue for others.

Overall, I can't put in to words how impressed I am with these. Spend the extra money and buy these babies, you'll be glad you did!

I must've read a hundred reviews before finally settling on these. I'm glad though, cause these work great. Quick and easy to interchange, and they don't take up much space - which is pretty much why I bought them.

The fact that you can interchange between weights so quickly makes it great if you're on a workout such as P90x and don't want to have a set of dumbbells for every weight up to 50 lbs.

Only downfall on these is they're kinda big, which I don't see how Bowflex could improve on that too much. Either way, I feel I made a good decision which I picked the BowFlex dumbbells out and am happy with my purchase.

4 out of 5 stars Nice product   August 18, 2010

I purchased these after significant reading of reviews. I'll include comments that I would have liked to have read.

1) Yes, there are two dumbells and each one goes up to 52.5 lbs. It'll be a while (if ever) that I need more than that on a single dumbell. I've seen gym monsters curling 50+ lbs and I'm not looking to get that huge.
2) The handles are comfortable.
3) The selection process is simple (just spin the dial). Each side (of the individual dumbells) is independant of the other, but of course if you only change one side the dumbell become unbalanced. Also, on mine, only one side 'clicks' and the other doesn't. I don't have any particular fears that it's not sturdy enough. Maybe if/when I start getting into the 40+ lb range I'll think it's not good but it's totally solid in the 20-30 lb range.
4) I'll concur with other owners about the cradle. When using the entire weight it becomes 'fiddly' to dock/undock the dumbell from the cradle due to imperfect alignment. If I were strong enough that I was using that much weight to work out it probably wouldn't be a problem. I have no issues cradling the dumbells using the weights that I'm comfortable working out with.
5) I just purchased these in July 2010 and the selector mechanism is still a heavy duty plastic paired with a metal flange.

5 out of 5 stars So far so good   August 15, 2010

My old roommate had a similar pair and it lasted the two of us for 4 years. We parted ways and I decided to buy my own. So far they have completely delivered. The space savings are significant and well worth the price. As for durability I do not have any issues. When I am done with each set I put them back in their stand on the floor. I don't see how there could be any issues unless you are dropping them when you are done. Like I said we had two people using the same design for 4 years and treating them pretty rough and we had no serious issues. We both just put the weights back in the stand after each set.

If I need a set of free weights again in the future I would definitely purchase these again. The fact that I can have a complete set of weights up to 52.5 lbs in only one spot of my living room is fantastic.
